MEMO

To Whom it May Concern:

I regret to inform you that I will not be returning to California. Ever. I belong in Berlin. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Regards,

Nancy Dougherty

Arm Candy.

So Sini and I have perfected our ability to rock at life. That statement itself, is, of course, obvious and requires no further explanation, but I WILL recount the events that prompted me to write a post about it...

The whole escapade began with us resolving we would not take the easy route and clump together with the 40 Stanford students...no no no, we were going to take our broken German and make GERMAN friends. (Though, incidentally, we ended up with another American and a Brit the night we decided this, but, NOT Stanford). So after seeing a ridiculous modern version of Carmina Burana, Sini and I trekked to East Berlin and went to the most amazing cocktail bar I've seen. Ever. And befriended the bartender. And agreed to go clubbing with him the next day.

So we meet up w/ Tolga (our bartender friend) 2am Friday night, dressed in the requested sexy/chic, and ready for anything- almost... and it turns out that Tolga isn't just a bartender. He has a party planning business on the side where he works with the hottest clubs and DJs in Berlin, and knows EVERYONE on the party scene. And as we got into the super classy club and he made his rounds talking to all the big names there, it became increasingly apparent that Sini and I were arm candy. Fuck yes, ARM CANDY!!! Now as two gals who normally trade on conversational skills, intellect, and possibly "quirkiness", we were QUITE honored. Obviously our conversation attempts with Tolga at the bar were limited to almost retarded small talk, so our primary skill set was down. We were basically invited to this scene because we seemed nice and were talking to him on a slow night, and apparently we're just East Berlin HOT (that's right! We've finally found a culture that appreciates us. Fuck you, California.) So we were not only honored, but are also now on the guest list for all the hottest parties in Berlin (after the one last night, he said next week's was going to be many times better- and to look out for the movie stars there. And after last night, I am inclined to believe him. And fuck. GUEST LIST.)

Hence, Sini and I are Berlin beautiful and fucking rock at life. QED.

And to summarize other events quickly: Berlin basketball (worse than Stanford), Berlin soccer (better than Stanford), Carmina Burana (modern version complete with simulated rape and almost full nudity), Boat party (met a TON of Germans/Berlin dwellers and found out which clubs were cool), FU Party with a bunch of North American Studies majors where Sini and I started a rousing round of the Electric Slide (Frei Universitaet, not whatever you were thinking), and some work (HA! not.) And TONIGHT we have several more clubs lined up to check out. Really. This is the LIFE.

POLAND!!!

So, I decided to make this into two posts, because I figured if it were one long post even FEWER people would read it. We just had our free Stanford sponsored trip to Poland (AMAZING!!!). In addition to vastly over feeding us wonderful food and beer (and did I mention free?), we got to tour all of Warsaw and learn about the history as well as take in how amazingly beautiful the city is! In addition, my most fantastic clubbing experience in mainland Europe took place in Warsaw. On a Monday night. Who would have guessed?

After brushing up on my European history, I have come to the conclusion that Poland is pretty much the shit. They got shafted by absolutely EVERYONE for decades, and yet never sat back and gave up. The Warsaw Uprising, Jewish Ghetto Uprising, Solidarity, and now rebuilding Warsaw in a stunningly beautiful and unique after 95% destruction....much respect, Poland. Much respect.

And now my exhaustion (from all that partying) will take over, and I will simply leave you yet again with the promise that pictures are coming.
